Story
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The actions that Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the cardinals take during the film’s conclave process are true to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican makes an official announcement that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal apartment is closed with crimson ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is secluded in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes.

Greetings again from the darkness
It seems like it’s been a while since we had a good old serious, tension-filled, “big” drama film with big movie stars. Well, that’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off his Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), delivers in his latest. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is a welcome crowd-pleaser that could earn him some Oscar consideration. Ralph Fiennes delivers what may be his finest performance to date. And that’s saying something for the respected actor who has previously excelled in films like SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE CONSTANT GARDNER (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), A BIGGER SPLASH (2018) and THE MENU (2022).

His impressive career is only bolstered by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, saddled with the heavy burden of facilitating the titular Conclave tasked with electing the new Pope. and as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, these games involve political maneuvering, power struggles, and backroom promises. Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, and instead exposes the various iterations of loyalty during each secret ballot (of course). His time is mostly spent investigating tips, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the immense egos of the few he cares about (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends not to want the job while campaigning as the “progressive” voice the church needs right now.

John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the more assertively ambitious who may or may not have purposefully undermined the work of others. Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is the most outspoken in his desire to return the Church to the old ways (Latin Masses forever!), which he considers appropriate.
