MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who finds herself at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her group counselor, VA (Morgan Freeman), the stern love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the recklessness of an unexpected love interest, Merit and Zoe’s warm and dysfunctional friendship keeps the couple isolated from the world. That is, until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), hiding out in his lake house, begins to lose his bearings and needs what he refuses…help. At its heart, this is a film about complicated friendships, a fractured family, and the complicated ways of coping with loss.
