Story

The Maynards and their children live a near-perfect billionaire family life. Armin is a hunter, but he doesn’t shoot animals because the family fortune allows them to live completely free from consequences. Ayn Rand: The point is, who’s to stop me?

I saw this at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival

Me? The production design, camerawork, and color rendition are excellent and very beautiful, and they help capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. Although the direction from Hoesl and Niemann is a bit chaotic, they have a clear vision of the style and atmosphere they’re going for.

I just don’t feel invested or interested enough to connect emotionally

Most of the shows are strong, a few of the children’s shows are a bit weak. The narrative is a good concept, but unfortunately it doesn’t feel as strong as it could have been because the narrative feels underdeveloped with some of the themes and the characters aren’t. It feels like it has good ideas that don’t quite reach their potential.

But it could have been stronger

There are moments that are shocking, exciting, and a bit bizarre, and I understand where the filmmakers and their vision are coming from. But it doesn’t feel entirely earned and the style seems too similar to something by Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall it’s not bad as there are a few moments that I appreciate.
